Animal Testing Should Be Banned Worldwide

Emilee Mehrtens

Rosy red blush being applied to the cheeks, bright red lipstick being smeared across the lips, flamboyant purple eyeshadow being brushed across it’s furry eyelids and fake, long eyelashes being placed on the now alluring monkeys eyelashes. Sadly, this is what over 30% of people think animal testing is. As cruel as that seems, actual animal testing is a million, trillion times worse than this. Animals are kept in miniscule cages socially isolated, psychologically traumatised and malnourished and this isn’t even the worst of it. Some animals are immobilised in restrictive devices for days, others have their skin burned off, some are forced to inhale toxic fumes or others even have their spines crushed. These methods of torture happen every hour, every minute and every second to millions of innocent animals. If that isn’t bad enough, Governments pump billions of dollars into this industry, basically encouraging this monstrosity. Animal testing is a violation of animal rights, wasteful and is an archaic method so overall has no point in today's society. Therefore I firmly believe that animal testing should be banned worldwide as soon as possible.

Animal testing is a violation of animal rights. Humans and animals share a lot of characteristics, some being we both feel, behave, think and experience pain. Therefore meaning if humans have a fundamental right to be treated respectfully why don’t animals? When a human participates in any type of research they are forced to sign documents after documents giving their consent, however animals don’t need to give their consent to live their life in pain and trauma? Some may argue that animals aren’t knowledgeable enough to do so, but just because they are not knowledgeable doesn’t give us the right to do whatever we want to them. An example that clearly shows this is a test that has recently been undergone where scientists drop corrosive chemicals into rabbits' extremely sensitive eyes. This example clearly shows humans showing pure ignorance towards animal rights. Although definitions of animal rights may vary, they all share the common ground of : animals are entitled to their interests such as the need to avoid suffering and should not be objectified. Therefore if animals have the right to avoid suffering and not be treated like property then why do rabbits have corrosive chemicals dropped into their eyes? And why are more than 115 million animals killed in the US alone for curiosity driven experimentation? Surely that is not within their interests. This relates to the wider world as there are protest groups out there that are forever going on about how zoos and aquariums are violating animal rights. However, they are predator free, eating diets that are 100x better than what they would get in the wild and are in relatively large enclosures. Meanwhile, just across the road a dog is being force-fed pesticides, mice and rats are being forced to inhale toxic fumes and chimpanzees are drowned and no one is speaking up about this being cruel?

Animal testing not only is extremely cruel but it is very wasteful, both of our money, resources and the animals lives. The US drug industry alone pumps $50 billion each year into the animal testing industry. Yet according to the most recent statistics there is only a 5-25% chance in human and animal tests matching up resulting in 95 out of 100 drugs that pass on animals failing on humans. On top of all that in the year 2018, 115 million animals got tested on and only 59 new medicines were approved by authorities. We are wasting so much money, so many of our greatest minds, so many resources, so much time and so many innocent animals on testing that is very inefficient and unreliable. An example that clearly shows this is a quote from Dr Richard Klausner, the former director of the National Cancer Institute “The history of cancer research has been a history of curing cancer in the mouse. We have cured mice of cancer for decades and it simply didn’t work in humans”. This example clearly shows that animal testing is very wasteful as even a professional recognizes that animals do not get things like schizophrenia, cancer or Parkinson’s so there is simply no point in testing on them. On top of that, experiments performed on them take years to be undergone and cost thousands of dollars but never are effective. This relates to the wider world because governments/companies across the world waste so much money in the wrong areas when there are bigger problems right under their noses such as the controversial 750 million dollar cycle bridge over the Auckland Harbour where there are roads that are in desperate need of fixing, people who need warmer houses and families who need feeding.

Animal testing is an archaic method. Animal testing is an outdated method that is very inefficient and could easily be replaced with animal free, cheaper, faster and more accurate alternatives. An example that clearly shows this is in vitro testing. This is a method where scientists have developed “organs-on-chips” that contain human cells grown in an ultra modern system to imitate the function of human organs and systems. The chips have been proven to work especially well instead of animals in disease research, drug testing and toxicity testing and have been proven that they replicate human diseases, physiology and drug responses way more accurately than cruel animal experimentation. This example clearly shows that animal testing is an archaic method and should be banned worldwide as in the past humans needed animals to survive. However, we have evolved so much that we no longer need to rely on them in other areas of our lives so why not this area too? There are so many opportunities to move forward in this type of testing so why don’t we take them? Humans are either too lazy or too stubborn and that is why we are stuck on the wrong, cruel side of history when it comes to testing on animals. This relates to the wider world because although we have innovated our way forward when it comes to lots of areas of our lives, but for other areas we are still stuck in the harsh, ineffective past. In addition to that, we are too lazy or too stubborn to move forward without paying any attention to the goods on the other side.

In conclusion, animal testing should be banned worldwide as it is a violation of animal rights, it is very wasteful and it is an archaic method. No one deserves to go through the pain those animals do every day, every hour, every minute and every second. Animal testing holds no benefit in our society so therefore we should unite and speak up about putting an end to it all. You can play a huge role in ending it by doing one of the following things: One, buying animal testing free products, two, donating to organisations or charities that promote not testing on animals and three, communicating with Government agencies, demanding them to implement alternatives to animal testing.
